چکیده

A series of papers by Gross (6, 7, 10) has de scribed the induction of leukemia, parotid gland tumors, and sarcomas in aging C3H, C57BR/cd, and C57BL mice which received cell-free leukemic extracts or filtrates when newborn. The inocula tion materials were obtained chiefly from AK-n1 and C58 mice which are characterized by a very high (80-90 per cent) incidence of spontaneous leukemia. In contrast, the recipient mice repre sented strains exhibiting a low incidence (4 per cent or less) of spontaneous leukemia. Law (12,13), Stewart (15,16), and Woolley (18) have also investigated this problem, with some what divergent results. Law, as well as Stewart, failed to demonstrate an incidence of leukemia in experimental mice significantly higher than that occurring in control mice. Both workers did, how ever, obtain parotid gland tumors in inoculated but not in control mice. Woolley's data offer con firmation of Gross's findings. As will be empha

mice (6) when we repeated and confirmed some of the early experiments of Gross (8, 9). Our interest in these salivary gland tumors was stimulated greatly when we found that C58 and AK, as well as C8H mice, would develop such tumors following inoculation of newborn with cell-free extracts of leukemic AK mouse tissues (4). The parotid gland tumors in C58 or AK mice developed earlier than did thos...

Problems in the production of leukemia with cell-free extracts.

The production of leukemia by inoculation of cell-free filtrates of leukemic tissues into newborn mice of low tumor incidence has been repeatedly reported by Gross (4-10) and confirmed by Woolley (14), Dulaney et a/. (S), and Fur th et al. (3). Other workers, however, have obtained conflicting results. Stewart (IS) and Law (11) were unable to induce leukemia; instead the inoculations resulted i...

The Development of Leukemia and Other Neoplasms in Mice Receiving Cell-free Extracts from a High-Leukemia

In recent years it has been demonstrated, first by Gross (6) and then by other workers (2, 5, 19), that leukemia in the mouse is transmissible by cell-free tissue extracts injected into newborn mice. In these experiments, active extracts obtained from the leukemic tissues of high-leukemia strains of mice were injected into newborn mice of a strain of known low-leukemia incidence. Successful ind...

a transmissible and filterable virus (23), electron micro scopic studies were performed which revealed its mor phology. At first, studies were carried out on AK mice that developed leukemia spontaneously (5, 17); electron microscopic studies were carried out, subsequently, on tissues from mice of low-leukemic strains, such as C3H, in which leukemia was induced by inoculation of a virus (24) ori...

The inheritance of susceptibility to the Gross leukemia virus in mice.

ACUTE lymphatic leukemia, originating in the thymus and frequently involving the spleen, lymph nodes and liver, occurs spontaneously in a large percentage of mice of two inbred strains of independent origin: the AK (and its substrain, AKR) and the C58. GROSS ( 195 1,1961 ) has isolated a virus from strain AK leukemic tissues which, when inoculated into mice of the inbred C3Hf/Bi or C57BR strain...
